FXA Group Adopts IBM Software to Extend, Reach of OpsSmartTM Food Traceability Solution January 16,2009

Enables greater safety, quality, and traceability across the entire food supply chain

BELLEVUE, WA– January 16, 2009:   FXA Group today announced it has signed an OEM agreement that will allow FXA to embed IBM’s InfoSphere Traceability Server into its OpsSmartTM food traceability software.  OpsSmart helps food producers around the world to improve the safety of the food supply, comply with emerging government regulations and protect the value of their brands. IBM and FXA will jointly market the combined solution to customers worldwide.

The food industry is facing some of the most challenging market conditions in its history. Consumer pressure, government regulations, and industry requirements for quality and traceability are driving producers to provide more detail on products. With foods being sourced across international borders, consumers are demanding to know more about the products they buy and the conditions they were grown and kept in as they travelled from farm to dinner table.

FXA OpsSmart is a food traceability solution that has been tested in successful private and government implementations in the produce, seafood, poultry and livestock industries.  The software can be used with various data capture technologies such as linear barcodes, 2-D barcodes and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems.

To enable food producers to share information with trading partners outside their four walls, FXA is embedding IBM’s InfoSphere Traceability Server into OpsSmart.  InfoSphere Traceability Server is industry-standard software that allows trading partners to track their products as they move through the global supply chain.  The product is fully compliant with GS1 EPCglobal’s Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) standard for capturing and sharing information on a product’s location, temperature, and other relevant data. The IBM software will allow food producers to use OpsSmart to share information concerning food origins or other important information with any trading partner that is also using an EPCIS compliant solution.

InfoSphere Traceability Server is used across multiple industries to solve a variety of challenges. In the food industry, it is used by Metro Group and Matiq, the information technology subsidiary of Nortura, Norway’s largest food supplier to improve food safety and freshness.

“To make the food supply safer for consumers, the food industry needs to make their operations work smarter,” said Scott Bergquist, IBM’s Information Platform Solutions Business Partner Development Executive.  “Using traceability technology from FXA and IBM, food producers and can help create a safer and more efficient food supply for all of us.”

“Our relationship with IBM helps us provide a complete standards-based traceability solution for food producers and their trading partners, said Paul Sribhibhadh, chairman, FXA Group.  “IBM’s technology expands our reach beyond our customers’ four walls to allow global information sharing, enabling full value traceability.”

In the food industry, full value traceability is achieved when food producers and their trading partners can access and share information about food from the farm to consumer.  OpsSmart provides building blocks that can accommodate all manner of traceability needs, while IBM’s InfoSphere Traceability Server ensures that this trusted information can be securely shared and exchanged with the appropriate parties.

Because of the new traceability legislation and increased concerns of our buyers in the industry, it is essential to have a foolproof traceability system in place. One small mistake on our part can mean the loss of a whole container of seafood, valuing between $1 to 2 million (U.S.). Our investment in OpsSmart? can protect PakFood (and all seafood exporters) against this type of loss”.
