Applying IT to enhance competitiveness for Vietnam’s aquatic processing enterprises.Sep 8, 2010
On Sept 8, in Can Tho, IBM in collaboration with FXA and SplendID held the conference “Applying IT to enhance competitiveness for Vietnam’s aquatic processing enterprises”. At the conference, IBM introduced the world’s food traceability systems using IT and RFID technology.
IBM’s food traceability solution provides an approach to overall food supply chain based on digital technology. Each element in the supply chain is attached with a single identification device which could be a chip fixed on a fish, a bar code pasted on a seafood packaging, or a separate ID code for a shrimp lake etc.
The product then can be scanned and has its data transferred to those who require information (distributors, importers or consumers).
By applying food traceability technology, enterprises can keep track of every single stage in the supply chain, production while identifying, dealing with any problem and pinpointing where the problem is. “IBM solutions will help Vietnam’s aquatic exporters enhance efficiency and competitiveness in the international market,” said Mr. Thieu Phuong Nam, Director of Business Development, IBM Vietnam.
In May 2009, IBM and FXA Group announced a first of a kind collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) and the Vietnamese State Agency for Technological Innovation (SATI) that would accelerate the adoption of traceability solutions to improve global food safety. The two first enterprises selected for pilot deployment are Binh An Aquatic Processing JSC (Bianfishco) and Ca Mau Aquatic Processing, Import and Export (Camimex).
Bianfishco is using OpsSmart software and IBM Inforsphere Traceability Server. Ms. Pham Thi Dieu Hien, the Management Board Chairperson cum General Director of Bianfishco said:”With the processing volume up to 200 tons of fish, even 300 tons of fish, using manual traceability practice caused a lot of difficulties. A spoiled batch of materials can cost profits of a year. IBM’s technology can help tackle the problem better than manual method.”
Mr. Ta Viet Dung – Vice Director of SATI, said SATI will closely collaborate with associations and leading technology corporations in the world to support Vietnam’s enterprises in applying seafood traceability technology. At the present time, SATI has continued to collaborate with experts from the Ministry of Science and Technology, VASEP and IBM to select a deployment solution, make surveys and choose pilot enterprises.”
